David Johansen, New York Dolls Musician, Battles Stage 4 Cancer and Brain Tumor
David Johansen, frontman of the New York Dolls, faces significant health challenges. His stepdaughter, Leah Hennessey, recently shared his journey concerning stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor. This announcement came after Johansen experienced a debilitating fall.
Leah Hennessey spoke about the continued hardships the family endures. She stated that Johansen has received intensive treatment over the past decade. "At the beginning of the pandemic, we discovered that David’s cancer had progressed," Leah detailed in a fundraiser statement. "He developed a brain tumor, and complications have risen since then."
Leah, whose mother married David in 2013, expressed the family's urgent need for help. She noted, "He has been unable to work for the majority of the past five years. David has kept his diagnosis private, but we must share this due to our severe financial burden."
While the specific type of cancer was not mentioned, Leah shared that David's health deteriorated significantly after a fall around Thanksgiving. This incident necessitated medical attention and further care. "David has been bedridden and incapacitated post-surgery," she explained. "Due to this trauma, his illness has worsened greatly. My mother is providing constant care."
Leah also recognized her stepdad’s wit and wisdom despite his struggles. "He is physically debilitated, and our family cannot meet his complex care needs without professional help."
In a statement to Rolling Stone, David confirmed the gravity of his situation. "We’ve managed my illness for years while enjoying time with friends and family," he reflected. However, he stated, "This fall has drastically increased my limitations."
He expressed the severity of his pain, saying, "This is the worst pain I’ve ever felt. I am usually someone who doesn’t ask for help, but this is an emergency. Thank you."
