Doja Cat Responds to Oscars Performance Criticism
Doja Cat has responded to those who criticized her performance at the 2025 Oscars. The 29-year-old artist shared her thoughts on Instagram on March 3, following her rendition of "Diamonds Are Forever" during a James Bond tribute.
"Thanks to the Academy Awards and Vanity Fair for having me," she captioned a photo featuring her in a fitted, gold sequined Balmain gown worn at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. "I rarely get the chance to sing like that. What I did was brave and scary as f— for me. While many didn’t like it, others appreciated it and I’m proud I pushed myself. The song is a classic, and I worked hard on it. Still, nerves got to me and a bitch hit some flats."
She continued, "I can’t wait to do something like that again. What a blessing that was. I feel amazing about the whole thing. Bye. 🙏💓."
Doja Cat teamed up with Raye and Blackpink’s Lisa for the tribute, performed midway through the night. Margaret Qualley began with a dance number, followed by Lisa at 27, singing "Live and Let Die," the iconic tune from the 1973 Bond film. Doja Cat then performed "Diamonds Are Forever," originally by Shirley Bassey, wearing a jeweled outfit that echoed the elegance of a Bond girl. Raye finished the medley with "Skyfall," theme song from the 2012 Bond movie.
While many viewers criticized Doja Cat's performance on X, stating concerns over her suitability for the song, others defended her. One viewer wrote, "Shirley Bassey deserves an apology on so many levels. Why was this approved?" Another commented, "That’s a really tough song to replicate, and I don’t think she was the correct artist for this."
Despite the backlash, fans rose to her defense. "She was frickin’ great!" a fan exclaimed on X. "The entire Bond medley was powerful and awesome."
Doja Cat, Lisa, and Raye recently released the song "Born Again," although the Oscars X account clarified that they would not perform it during the show. The social media announcement stated, "Not ‘Born Again!’ But still legendary. Stay tuned. 😉," posted in late February.
The decision to feature the trio surprised many Oscar fans, as none were connected to the films vying for awards this year. In 2022, Doja Cat contributed to the "Vegas" song for the "Elvis" soundtrack, which earned eight Oscar nominations but didn’t win any awards at the 2023 ceremony.
