Ed Sheeran Reveals Titles for Next Five Albums and Inspirations Behind Them

Ed Sheeran recently discussed his next five album titles in an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The 34-year-old singer-songwriter explained that these new projects, similar to his earlier mathematical album series, are interconnected.

Sheeran confirmed that the first album in this lineup is titled "Play." He shared his early inspiration: "When I was about 18, I conceived the idea for ten albums. The titles are Plus, Multiply, Divide, Subtract, Equals, and then Play, Pause, Fast Forward, Rewind, and Stop." This titles scheme highlights a cohesive vision similar to his math-themed works.

The new titles reflect Sheeran's admiration for filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. "I’m a little obsessed with Tarantino," he said. "I heard he was aiming for ten films, plus side projects like 'Grindhouse'." His intention is to create ten albums, complemented by occasional side projects. He previously released "No. 6 Collaborations Project" in 2019 and "Autumn Variations" in 2023.

Additionally, Sheeran discussed a unique upcoming album that he plans to release after his death. He described his vision: "I want to create an album that encompasses my entire life. You include various songs, and it’s specified in your will to be released upon your death. The album is called 'Eject'."

He elaborated, "Imagine if Paul McCartney released a record that includes a song from when he was 16, one from 20, and another from 30. It’d be incredible." He humorously added that listeners might think, "Still, from the grave he’s messing with us."

Moreover, Sheeran is gearing up to release a single titled "Azizam" from the album "Play." He also talked about another song called "Old Phone." This track draws from his personal experience related to a lawsuit he faced over his hit single "Thinking Out Loud," which he ultimately won.

The musician recounted how he abandoned his phone for a tablet in 2015, using it solely for email. However, he had to reactivate his old phone to provide the necessary information for lawyers. "Switching it on was like stepping into a time machine," Sheeran said. He reflected on receiving unexpected messages, including one from a late friend, an argument with an ex, and another from a family member he hadn't spoken to in ten years. "It really, really spun me out," he admitted.
