Elton John Reveals He Avoids Listening to His Classic Songs

Elton John recently discussed his musical habits on "The Scott Mills Breakfast Show" on Feb. 7, 2025. He joined Brandi Carlile to promote their upcoming collaborative album, "Who Believes in Angels?" During the conversation, John expressed that he rarely listens to his own songs, PEOPLE reported.

"I never go and put my old music on," the 77-year-old singer stated. He admitted to listening only for archival approvals, saying, "I had to approve a live album for Record Store Day from 1977. It astounded me how great it was."

He shared his surprise at how enjoyable the experience was after approving the album. "I was quite surprised how good it was," he added with a touch of modesty.

John had recently reviewed footage from his past for the 2024 documentary "Elton John: Never Too Late." He reflected that this review brought back many memories from earlier eras. "The music from 1970 to 1975 was fantastic!" he acknowledged.

Despite not regularly revisiting his work, he recognized the high volume of music he produced during those years. "We recorded 13 albums along with numerous singles and B sides," he noted. This period also featured extensive touring, contributing to significant momentum.

John candidly admitted humorously that he struggles to watch performances of himself. "I never watch anything about me," he confessed. "I'm not one to bask in my success."

He found watching his career documentary emotionally challenging at first. However, he later appreciated the portrayal it offered. "The second time I saw it, I really loved it," he shared, feeling it truly captured his career journey.

Moreover, John credited his music as a lifesaver during challenging periods. He mentioned nearly losing himself but finding strength in continuing to create music. "When I got sober in 1990, my life turned around," he reflected appreciatively.

With his husband David Furnish and their two sons, Zachary and Elijah, John expressed incredible gratitude. "As shown in the documentary, I’m the happiest and luckiest man in the world," he said.
