Google may secure its biggest acquisition deal soon
Google is reportedly planning to make its biggest acquisition ever by purchasing Wiz, a cloud cybersecurity startup. The potential deal, which has drawn interest from Google, is estimated to be worth around $23 billion. This figure surpasses what Google paid for Motorola Mobility in 2012, making it the largest acquisition in the company's history. This is reported by SSP.
Based in New York City, Wiz provides specialized security tools and scanners for enterprise-level clients. Their innovative approach involves creating a layer between cloud environments, enabling rapid identification and elimination of critical risks for businesses. This acquisition seems strategically focused on targeting Microsoft, which has faced recent high-profile security breaches and appears increasingly vulnerable.
The driving force behind this acquisition endeavor is suggested to be Thomas Kurian, the head of Google Cloud. If successful, it would further solidify Google's reputation as a secure cloud platform. This aligns with their previous investments, such as the $500 million purchase of a cloud security startup in 2022 and the $5.4 billion acquisition of Mandiant, the company credited with discovering the SolarWinds hack in the same year.
While the deal appears promising, there is still a possibility of it falling through and triggering regulatory reviews by U.S. authorities. Under the administration of President Biden, significant antitrust actions have been taken, such as the Department of Justice's lawsuit against Google's search deal with Apple and the Federal Trade Commission's unsuccessful attempt to block Microsoft's acquisition of Activision.
