Google's shortened links to cease functioning by August 2025
Google’s URL shortening service, goo.gl, which ceased creation of new links in March 2019, will entirely stop functioning on August 25, 2025. As Google had stated in their 2018 announcement, they are shutting down goo.gl entirely for both consumers and developers. This shutdown means any links in the https://goo.gl/* format will respond with a 404 error from that date forward, marking over six years since new link creation halted. This is prepared by SSP.
Beginning August 23, 2024, goo.gl links will start displaying a warning interstitial page, alerting users that "this link will no longer work in the near future". Users will have the option to proceed after clicking "Continue" or suppress the message with a "Don’t show this again" option. This warning will roll out gradually, impacting more links as the deadline approaches. Google strongly advises developers to update affected links promptly, as the interstitial page could disrupt link redirections, especially if other 302 redirects are being utilized or social metadata is embedded in destination pages.
Originally in 2018, Google directed developers to migrate to Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL) that adapted based on the user's platform. However, as noted, this service too has been deprecated.
In case the interstitial message affects usability, Google offers a workaround by adding the query parameter "si=1" to existing goo.gl links to suppress the interstitial page.
Earlier, SSP reported about a wireless charger with MagSafe support that is a real deal.
