Hilaria Baldwin Reveals Alec Baldwin Contemplated Suicide After Rust Shooting
Hilaria Baldwin shared that her husband, Alec Baldwin, faced thoughts of suicide after the tragic 2021 shooting that killed Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Hutchins was fatally struck by a bullet discharged from a prop gun in Alec’s hand on the New Mexico set.
Reflecting on this challenging time, Hilaria discussed Alec's struggles. During an episode of The Baldwins, she mentioned finding messages between them in which Alec expressed a desire to end his life. "He said he wanted to kill himself," she relayed.
In her confession, Hilaria articulated Alec's ongoing battle with "survivor's guilt." She explained, "He wishes it were him. He would change places in a second." This emotional turmoil has led Alec to frequently revisit that tragic day in his thoughts. Hilaria noted that the incident has significantly impacted his physical and mental health.
The effects have been severe, with Hilaria stating, "All of a sudden, he started having heart problems." Alec, married to Hilaria since 2012, has had multiple hospitalizations. She disclosed that he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following Halyna’s death.
"Everyone close to Alec has seen his mental health decline," Hilaria explained in another episode. Alec has questioned why he survived the accident: "If an accident had to happen that day, why am I still here? Why couldn't it have been me?"
Alec expressed concern about how the incident has affected his family, including their seven children. He told Hilaria, "I always feel more in pain about you than me." Understanding the situation's impact on her well-being remains challenging for both.
Regarding the legal aftermath, an involuntary manslaughter case against Alec was dismissed in July 2024. A judge determined that evidence was withheld from the defense, as related bullets were categorized under a different case number. Since then, Alec filed a civil lawsuit concerning malicious prosecution and violations of civil rights.
