Hilaria Baldwin Wrote Letters for Kids Amid Alec's Rust Trial Concerns
Hilaria Baldwin expressed worries about her and Alec Baldwin during his trial. On the March 9 episode of The Baldwins, they discussed their experience after Alec's charges were dismissed. Hilaria, 41, shared her uncertainty about the situation, saying, "This might sound silly, but I wrote little letters to the kids and hid them. I told a friend where they are in case something happened to us."
The couple has seven children: Carmen, 11, Rafael, 9, Leonardo, 8, Romeo, 6, Eduardo, 4, María, 4, and Ilaria, 2. Their eldest daughter, Carmen, previously voiced worries about her father's legal troubles. Hilaria recalled, "Carmen asked me, ‘When daddy goes to New Mexico, do I say goodbye to him? Do I say goodbye in a special way?’" She felt deeply emotional explaining how Carmen feared they might be harmed in court.
Hilaria also described Alec's struggles during the trial's early stages. She revealed, "I found these text messages between us after he said he wanted to kill himself. He has survivor’s guilt… he wishes it were him." The toll of the situation has impacted his mental and physical health, including heart issues and fainting episodes.
Alec was charged with involuntary manslaughter in January 2023 after the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. He held the prop gun fired during the October 2021 incident that resulted in Hutchins' death and injury to director Joel Souza. Alec has maintained he is not responsible. Although he pleaded not guilty and had the charges dismissed in April 2023, new allegations led to another indictment. This second case was eventually dropped, and Alec has filed a lawsuit against the prosecution for malicious prosecution.
Reflecting on the last three years, Hilaria said, "It's been a significant chunk of my children’s lives." The older children, despite being younger, understand the situation. She noted the youngest three are unaware of life without these events surrounding them.
Alec mused about life before the incident. "Our lives are very, very different now," he acknowledged. He noted how this has influenced their children, forcing them to confront these circumstances in their own ways.
