How Tina Turner Collaborated with Bob Mackie for Her Iconic Look

Bob Mackie reflects on his pivotal collaboration with Turner during this significant phase of her life and career. In the documentary "Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion," he recounts an encounter in Hollywood. During this time, Turner had separated from her ex-husband and musical partner, Ike Turner. Mackie remembers her navigating hotels with her assistant while guest starring on shows like "The Sonny & Cher Show." "She was trying to establish her own career," he explains.

As he worked with Turner through various performances and her friendship with Cher, her inquiries became more specific. "She recognized me for dressing her in these variety shows," Mackie shares.

Turner often explored different fabric options, purchasing inexpensive evening gowns in Paris. Mackie remembers, "She’d buy cheap gowns. They weren’t great, but she liked the fabric." He laughs as he recalls her asking, "Can we make this look like a cavewoman?"

"We transformed those budget dresses into Tina Turner outfits by making cuts and adjustments," he notes. Each fitting led to hilarious moments, reflecting their creative dynamic.

Mackie fondly remembers his time with her, highlighting Turner's lively spirit. "She always had a couple of glasses of wine, sharing the best stories," he recalls. Backstage, he'd often observe her taking Tylenol, slipping into high heels, and confidently stepping onto the stage. "It was just crazy," he shares.

According to Mackie, Turner’s innate talent distinguished her from others aiming for success in the music industry.

Turner possessed an unparalleled charisma. "Some people are born entertainers. They can’t help it," he articulates. "She would engage with the audience effortlessly." Mackie draws parallels to other stars like Bette Midler but notes Turner’s distinct energy.
