Instagram is Testing Vertical Grids to Align with Current Trends
Instagram is currently testing an update that could transform profile grids from squares to vertical rectangles, a shift that aligns with the current trend of vertical photo and video content. As Instagram chief Adam Mosseri highlighted, most images uploaded today are vertical, typically in a 4 by 3 format for photos or 9 by 16 for videos, making it challenging to crop them into squares. He mentioned that while the square grid design originated when only square photos could be uploaded prior to 2015, it's time to better accommodate the prevailing vertical content. This is prepared by SSP.
Mosseri acknowledged that this change might be disruptive for users who have meticulously curated their profiles with the current square layout. "I recognize it can be frustrating for those who have taken extensive time to ensure everything lines up perfectly, but our goal is to support the present content trends," Mosseri said. He also explained that managing this transition smoothly is a high priority.
Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai confirmed, "We’re testing this vertical profile grid with a small number of users and are keenly paying attention to community feedback before making any further decisions." For users who have crafted their pages around the square grid, this test suggests a potential shift toward vertical rectangles in the future, urging them to brace for a possible redesign. This update is still in its testing phase, making it a pivotal issue to monitor.
