J.K. Simmons Shares Secrets of 28-Year Marriage to Michelle Schumacher: ‘Try to Really Listen’
J.K. Simmons, 69, revealed the secrets behind his enduring marriage to Michelle Schumacher during the "Red One" premiere in New York City on November 11. He emphasized three key principles: "Be nice. Be on the nice list... And listen."
Simmons highlighted that effective listening forms the foundation of a strong marriage. He acknowledged that, despite his experience, he continues to improve his listening skills. "None of us do that all the time; it's a work in progress," he shared. "But try to listen, try to really listen."
Married since 1996, Simmons and Schumacher, 58, are parents to two children: Joe, 25, and Olivia, 22. Their love story began in 1991 when Schumacher joined the cast of a "Peter Pan" musical in which Simmons portrayed Captain Hook and she danced.
Reflecting on their first meeting, Simmons recalled the moment vividly. "I rented a car and remember seeing our dance captain with this beautiful, petite blonde," he shared in May. "I didn't want to be the idiot leering at her."
Simmons recounted his embarrassing visit to Schumacher's dressing room. He aimed to wish her a good show but instead stubbed his toe, squealing in surprise. "I tried to be Mr. Cool," he said, laughing at the memory.
Despite the awkwardness, Simmons believed Schumacher was attracted to him. He noted, "Somehow, she still found me attractive." Later, Schumacher revealed that she had a crush on him from their first encounter.
"Much, much later, Michelle told me, ‘Oh, who's that?’" Simmons explained. The dance captain had replied, "Oh, that's J.K. He's straight. He's our Captain Hook."
Through good and awkward times, Simmons and Schumacher have maintained a relationship built on more than just love—it's a blend of kindness, humor, and continuous growth.
