James Cameron Says Avatar 3 Might Not Align with Audience Expectations
James Cameron asserts that Avatar 3: Fires and Ash may offer a different experience than expected. He believes this film could be the boldest in the Avatar series.
In a Jan. 15 interview with the U.K.'s Empire Magazine, Cameron emphasized his desire to make "brave choices." He wants the sequel to diverge from the first two films while maintaining impactful storytelling. He said, "We could be getting high on our own supply here, and everybody who looks at it [the new film] goes, ‘F---, that’s not what I signed up for.’"
Cameron insists that taking risks is crucial. He noted, "If you’re not making brave choices, you’re wasting everybody’s time and money." He remarked that it's necessary, though not solely sufficient, for success. He expressed the need to "break the mold every fricking time."
Expectations and Production Insights
The director hinted that audiences may encounter intense situations in Avatar 3. He assures fans these moments "will feel earned." Cameron described new action sequences as "really clever," stating that they are thrilling. He said, "You can get your blood up in this movie." Furthermore, he is excited about delving into deeper character development.
Regarding the production timeline, Cameron shared that the movie is in "strong shape" now, compared to Avatar: The Way of Water. He mentioned, "We’ve doubled the number of shots finished at this stage... So that puts us well ahead of the curve." He added, chuckling, that their team is "actually getting good at this."
Shared Production Efforts and Returning Cast
In an exclusive December 2023 interview, Cameron revealed his crew captured parts of Avatar 3 while working on Way of Water. "We did the capture on three and the live-action photography on three... we even did part of movie four," he explained.
Cameron also confirmed that Kate Winslet will reprise her role as Ronal in the third film. He noted her distinctive training with a couple who practice shaman techniques. He mentioned, "What you see her [Winslet] doing... is based on actual practice," referring specifically to scenes in the new film.
The Avatar franchise remains immensely successful, known for its stunning visuals and immersive world. The original Avatar is the highest-grossing film of all time, raking in $2.9 billion globally. Its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, ranks third at $2.3 billion.
Avatar 3: Fires and Ash is set to release in theaters on Dec. 19, 2025.
