James Van Der Beek Apologizes to Loved Ones Who Learned of His Cancer Through the Media

James Van Der Beek, known for his role in Dawson’s Creek, revealed on Nov. 3 that he has colorectal cancer. He expressed regret that some loved ones discovered this news through the media. Allegedly, a tabloid was preparing to leak the information, prompting James to share the news sooner.

Cancer does not adhere to a set timeline, and James felt rushed to notify the public. In his Instagram post, he stated, "Apologies to all the people in my life who I’d planned on telling myself. Nothing about this process has occurred on my preferred timeline… But we roll with it, taking each surprise as a signpost, pointing us toward a greater destiny than we would have discovered without divine intervention."

James explained that he intended to discuss his diagnosis with media for awareness. However, he quickly changed plans after hearing that the tabloid would unveil the information. Until then, he had shared his journey privately, alongside his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia (14), Joshua (12), Annabel (10), Emilia (8), Gwendolyn (6), and Jeremiah (3).

"I’ve been dealing with this privately until now," he remarked. "I’m getting treatment and focusing on my health more than ever. I’m in a good place and feeling strong. It’s been quite the initiation, and I’ll share more when I’m ready."

The responses from others have touched him, and he expressed gratitude. "Please know that my family and I deeply appreciate all the love and support," he wrote, hinting that more updates on his situation would come.

James shared his diagnosis to the public in a statement to People, noting, "There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good." While processing this challenging news, he has embraced every special moment with family — like celebrating Halloween with joy.

In his post from Oct. 31, he reminisced, "I made all my own costumes growing up. Didn’t really have a choice. But I loved it. Should probably have been the first sign my parents that I would end up an actor."

When Gwendolyn’s angel costume delivery was delayed, James encouraged her to be creative. "After acknowledging the tears, she was given the project of making her own halo, which she worked on for HOURS," he shared. He noted the pride she felt when she saw her work in the mirror: "that, for me, was my favorite moment of Halloween."
