Josh Gad Discusses Weight Loss Journey with GLP-1 Medication
Josh Gad is sharing his experiences regarding his weight loss journey with GLP-1 medication. He expressed mixed feelings about the process during the January 27 episode of Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast. "I’m on a GLP-1 … this is the first time I’ve opened up about this," the 43-year-old actor revealed. He discussed how the medication has effectively diminished the hunger pains he feels, stating that "so much of that is psychological." He noted that the medication alters the signals related to hunger.
Gad has lost 40 pounds using his initial GLP-1 medication, but had to switch due to developing diverticulitis—a condition involving inflammation in the colon. "It is a miracle drug," he commented, emphasizing his disappointment at having to change medications since it had been beneficial for his weight loss.
Despite his success, Gad stressed that using medication does not mean he can neglect diet and exercise. "I’m figuring out this new one, and it is life-changing, but it doesn’t mean I can eat whatever I want or skip the gym," he clarified. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy relationship with food and exercise, admitting that he sometimes feels like he’s cheating himself.
Gad expressed concerns regarding how his weight loss may affect his career. "I’ve always been the funny fat guy. Can I be the funny skinny guy?" he asked, unsure if he would still be accepted in new roles. However, his primary motivation drives from his desire to be present for his children, 14-year-old Ava and 10-year-old Isabella. "I’m not worried about my career because my primary goal is, I want to be there for my kids," he explained.
His wife, Ida Darvish, 49, has expressed concerns about his use of medication and its implications on his long-term health. According to Gad, she is "not thrilled" with his choice, fearing he might not fully address the underlying issues behind his weight gain.
