Jude Law Confirms He Will Play Putin in Upcoming Political Thriller The Wizard of the Kremlin
Actor Jude Law is pivoting to a challenging role in his career with his upcoming portrayal of Russian President Vladimir Putin in The Wizard of the Kremlin. At 52 years old, Law recounted in a Deadline interview his mixed feelings about taking on such a complex figure, considering the role akin to climbing Everest. Despite this, he has committed to the part, which will see him depict a younger Putin at the start of his political dominance. This is prepared by SSP.
The film, adapted from Giuliano da Empoli's bestselling book, will be helmed by French director Olivier Assayas, with a screenplay co-written by Assayas and Emmanuel Carrère. The narrative unfolds in the early 1990s after the USSR's downfall. It follows Vadim Baranov, an artist turned TV producer, navigating the complexities of propaganda and governance, trying to steer clear of this environment through his attraction to Ksenia, a person with a free spirit.
Joining Law on screen will be a stellar cast including Paul Dano, Alicia Vikander, and Zach Galifianakis, with Dano slated to portray the protagonist, Baranov. Although the production start date remains undisclosed, the announcement was made at Cannes Film Festival, suggesting it may become a significant contender in upcoming festival circuits.
Law, who continues to captivate audiences with recent roles in The Order and Disney+'s Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, also recently celebrated a personal milestone—a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, dedicated to his late mother. As he balances acting and life's poignant moments—including celebrating with his family—The Wizard of the Kremlin represents a new horizon in his acclaimed career.
