Karla Sofía Gascón Calls Selena Gomez a "Rich Rat" Amid Feud Rumors
Karla Sofía Gascón allegedly insulted her co-star Selena Gomez during a comment on a post denying feud rumors between Gomez and Hailey Bieber. This incident was highlighted by Latin Times on January 31, revealing a past social media exchange.
According to the report, Gascón's comment came while discussing a news article that refuted claims of animosity between Gomez and Bieber, who married Justin Bieber in 2018. "She's a rich rat who acts like a poor wretch whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife," Gascón supposedly stated in Spanish in October 2022. This response surfaced alongside a story in the Mexican newspaper Reforma about Gómez and Bieber posing for photographs together.
This episode is not isolated. Gascón has faced scrutiny for several past posts aimed at various sensitive topics, including Muslim communities, the murder of George Floyd, and issues relating to diversity at the Oscars. These older comments have recently resurfaced on social media, particularly as the March 2 award show approaches.
As the first openly trans performer nominated for an Academy Award in this year’s ceremony, Gascón has publicly acknowledged the remarks that have drawn criticism. In a statement shared with NBC News, she expressed remorse for her actions without confirming the specifics of her past comments. "I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain," she stated.
On January 31, Gascón issued another apology via Instagram, saying, "I sincerely apologize to all those who have felt bad about the way I have expressed myself at any stage of my life. I cannot repair my past actions; I can only say that today I am not the same person as 10 or 20 years ago."
In her message, Gascón also suggested doubts about the authenticity of certain statements attributed to her. "They have created posts as if it were me, insulting even my colleagues. Things that I wrote to glorify as if they were criticism. Jokes as if they were reality, words that without the background only seem like hate," she commented.
Recently, Gascón denied claims of insulting fellow Oscar Best Actress nominee Fernanda Torres, although she did not detail the allegations. "I have never, at any point, said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her movie," Gascón said in a January 21 video interview with Brazilian publication Folha de S.Paulo. "However, there are people working with Fernanda Torres tearing me and Emilia Pérez down. That speaks more about their movie than mine."
