Kevin Smith Reflects on Chasing Amy and Harvey Weinstein
Kevin Smith reflects on his 1997 film, Chasing Amy, while grappling with complex emotions regarding Harvey Weinstein. In Sav Rodgers' documentary, Chasing Chasing Amy, Smith shares his first encounter with Weinstein. He recalls screening Chasing Amy for Weinstein, who reacted with tears. This is prepared by SSP.
"He's crying, Harvey," Smith states in the documentary. "He goes, 'That's a Miramax movie,' which I loved at the time." He then expresses the tension of those fond memories. "Now, put through the filter of what we know, it’s tough to f---ing feel sentimental about it."
Smith mentions his earlier innocence as a young filmmaker. He reflects, "Maybe that's how I feel sentimental — I think, ‘How sweet.’ That naive 26- or 27-year-old believed everything he was presented."
When Chasing Amy premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 1997, Weinstein showed keen interest in the film. "He had dollar signs in his eyes," Smith notes, lamenting how optimistic everyone felt at the time. "All of this was happening while we were showcasing this very feminist and forward-thinking movie."
However, the joy of that moment contrasts sharply with the later revelations about Weinstein. Smith states, "I can't erase the past... My career's tied up with him." He expresses frustration as he reflected on other films, including his directorial debut, Clerks. "I can’t go back and take his name off the f---ing movies."
Chasing Chasing Amy premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival and is currently showing in select theaters.
