King Charles Recognizes Carey Mulligan and Others in New Year Honors List
In his annual New Year Honors list, King Charles III acknowledged notable figures such as Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan, former England soccer team manager Gareth Southgate, and London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan. This announcement was made by the U.K. Cabinet Office, which detailed that over 1,200 individuals from various sectors would receive honors for their contributions and service to British society. The 2025 honors list was disclosed on December 31.
Carey Mulligan, 39, received the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). She shares this honor with actress Sarah Lancashire, recognized for her contributions to drama. "It’s an unexpected delight," commented Lancashire, 60, according to the Guardian. Mulligan gained prominence from her performance in the 2009 film "An Education," earning her a Best Actress Oscar nomination. She later received two additional nominations for her roles in "Promising Young Woman" (2021) and "Maestro" (2024).
Gareth Southgate, Sadiq Khan, and actor Stephen Fry were also recognized with knighthoods for their significant contributions to soccer, public service, and mental health awareness, respectively. Reflecting on his recognition, Fry expressed, "When you are recognized, it does make you feel a bit ‘crikey’... Thinking about my childhood, my unhappiness and failures, in retrospect, it's quite emotional." He humorously recalled how his parents often anticipated bad news with every phone call.
Mayor Sadiq Khan shared his gratitude, stating, "I could never have imagined growing up on a council estate in south London that I would be mayor of London. It's the honor of my life to serve the city I cherish. I vow to continue developing a fairer, safer, greener, and more prosperous London for all its communities."
Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the honors list pays tribute to "unsung heroes" of British society. He remarked, "Every day, ordinary people engage in extraordinary actions for their communities. They embody the best of the UK and the principle of service, which is central to this government's mission. The New Year Honours List honors these brave contributors, and I extend my thanks for their remarkable efforts."
