Lady Gaga Opens Up About Her Mental Health Struggles
Lady Gaga recently shared her journey with mental health challenges while appearing on "The Interview" podcast by The New York Times on March 8. At 38 years old, the singer discussed a difficult chapter in her life, saying, "[Five years ago], I had psychosis. I was not deeply in touch with reality for a while." She explained how this period significantly impacted her life, but personal dedication helped her regain control over her mental well-being.
Gaga, known as Stefani Germanotta, reflected on this challenging time and how it positively influenced her relationship with fiancé Michael Polansky. "It was a hard time, and it was really special when I met my partner because when I met Michael, I was in a much better place," she recounted. She recalled his early observation, "I know you could be a lot happier than you are," which initially startled her.
"I didn’t want him to think poorly of me," she added, expressing a desire to be perceived as a happy and composed individual. Discussing her mental health experiences, Gaga mentioned the difficulty of speaking openly about such matters: "It’s something that I have found increasingly harder to talk about. I hate feeling defined by it." Despite these challenges, she hopes to inspire others by sharing her story: "It can get better. It did for me, and I’m grateful for that."
Gaga publicly started dating Polansky in 2019, and they announced their engagement in July 2024. During the podcast, she praised him, stating, "From the moment that I met Michael, he had the most warm and kind disposition of maybe anyone that I had met in my whole life." Polansky also addressed the challenges of their public relationship in *ELLE’s* February 2025 issue.
"Accepting that you won’t have the privacy others might have was the hardest part," he shared, noting adjustments to fame. However, he expressed gratitude for Gaga’s patience and the importance of maintaining strong friendships and family connections. "We find normalcy where we can."
