Lauren Graham Shares Plans for a Gilmore Girls Revival
Lauren Graham recently discussed her vision for another revival of Gilmore Girls, the series that starred Alexis Bledel, Scott Patterson, and Kelly Bishop.
Graham expressed excitement about returning to Stars Hollow. She played Lorelai Gilmore from 2000 to 2007 and shared her thoughts about a second revival after Netflix’s A Year in the Life in 2016. She believes that a movie might be more practical than a TV series for the next revival.
On the Armchair Expert podcast, she stated, "Given everyone's lives and schedules, it's a Christmas movie." She emphasized that it is not an avoidance of the topic, but rather a vision she can clearly imagine. Graham noted, "The Brits do this so well with their beloved shows; you get a Christmas special." It offers fans a chance to see their favorite characters together, reminiscent of the Walmart commercial where she reunited with Scott Patterson, her on-screen love.
If a Christmas special comes to fruition, she insists it cannot replicate the past. "Now, Lorelai and Luke got married," she remarked. "Now, Rory's maybe having a baby." The dynamics will undoubtedly shift, moving away from simply circling the gazebo again.
This wouldn't be the first revival for Gilmore Girls. In 2016, Netflix offered fans a four-part revival titled A Year in the Life, nine years after the original series ended. Graham cherished working again with creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. However, she recognizes that fan reception was varied.
"There seems to have been a mixed reaction," she observed regarding viewers' satisfaction. "For me, it was an incredibly satisfying, beautiful experience." While she felt personal growth from revisiting the character, she knows that not all fans felt the same nostalgic joy.
Graham also emphasized addressing the wishes of devoted fans: "How do you honor those people who have kept it alive?" she asked. She contemplated various approaches, such as prequels or stories within franchises that continue to engage fans.
Although she remains uncertain about pursuing another revival, she is open to the opportunity. "I do still get asked whether it’s better to leave them wanting more," she added. "Thank God it isn't up to me." Should an opportunity arise, she stated, "If someone calls me to do it, I'll do it."
