Leslie Charleson's Cause of Death Confirmed
TMZ reports that Leslie Charleson, renowned for her role in "General Hospital," died of blunt head trauma on January 12 at 79. The outlet shared this information on February 13, referencing details from the County of Los Angeles Department of Health's death certificate.
The certificate designated her official cause of death as "sequelae of blunt head trauma," indicating repercussions from a previous head injury. Additionally, it noted other medical issues that Charleson managed prior to her passing. These conditions included asthma, arthritis, atrial fibrillation, and normal pressure hydrocephalus. As defined by the Mayo Clinic, hydrocephalus involves the accumulation of fluid in the brain's cavities.
Charleson portrayed Dr. Monica Quartermaine, starring in over 2,000 episodes of "General Hospital." Executive producer Frank Valentini shared the announcement of her death on the show's official Instagram account.
In his heartfelt tribute, Valentini expressed deep sadness over losing his "dear friend and colleague." He reflected on her nearly 50-year legacy on the show, stating, "Just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew." Alongside the tribute, he shared an image of Charleson smiling.
Valentini commented on their conversations, saying, "I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit, and incredible presence on set." He extended his condolences to her family and friends during this challenging period.
Charleson joined "General Hospital" in 1977, becoming the longest-running cast member. Recalling her first day on set in 2022, she said, "I started the show the day Elvis Presley died." Amidst the emotional turmoil, she faced a grim introduction, being informed of a strike that forced her to bring her own attire.
Charleson noted the difficult start she encountered, mentioning she felt unwelcome due to replacing actress Patsy Rahn. After three decades, she continued the role in a recurring capacity, returning several times, including her last appearance in a wheelchair in December 2023.
