Logitech Steps Back From the Idea of 'Forever Mouse'
Logitech recently clarified that the concept of a ‘forever mouse’—a high-quality, software-enabled device with longevity, similar to a wristwatch—was just an exploratory idea with no plans for a subscription model. Nicole Kenyon, Logitech's communications head, stated to The Verge and other publications, "There are no plans for a subscription mouse." This response came after Logitech CEO Hanneke Faber introduced the idea during an interview on The Verge's Decoder podcast with Nilay Patel. The backlash was immediate, as customers expressed concerns over the potential inconvenience and cost of recurring payments for a common peripheral. This is prepared by SSP.
In the podcast, Faber shared insights from Logitech’s innovation center in Ireland, where the forever mouse was shown to her. She highlighted that such a mouse would be "a little heavier" with "great software and services" that receive regular updates. Patel then inquired if Faber could "envision a subscription mouse," to which she cautiously responded, "possibly," suggesting customers could receive regular updates and never need another mouse, akin to Logitech's video conferencing services.
Further discussing monetization, Faber was intrigued by the forever mouse model but admitted the traditional "innovate and upgrade" approach is still their primary strategy. She emphasized the importance of sustainability initiatives, such as recycling and refurbishing products. Kenyon, seeking to quell the misunderstanding, reiterated that "the mouse mentioned is not an actual or planned product but a peek into provocative internal thinking on future possibilities for more sustainable consumer electronics."
This marks Logitech’s second effort to clarify statements made in the podcast; previously, they assured customers they were not discontinuing their smart home cameras, as inferred from the same interview. As ongoing software support requires sustainable funding methods, a subscription model can't be the default solution for all tech enhancements. Therefore, Logitech will continue to pursue innovative sustainable products while exploring business models that align with consumers' expectations and market viability.
