Maren Morris Discusses How Her Son Hayes Influenced Her Music
Maren Morris has openly shared that her 5-year-old son Hayes significantly impacts her songwriting. During the 2025 GLAAD Awards, she confirmed this in an interview with PEOPLE. The country singer, 34, shares Hayes with her ex Ryan Hurd and stated that he "definitely" influences her creations.
Morris specifically pointed out her song "Because of Course" from her EP. "He definitely inspired my song 'Because of Course,'" she explained. She elaborated that regardless of the song's specific subject, each piece is inherently connected to her experiences as a mother. "These songs are all written after his existence," she notes. This acknowledgment shows how motherhood has reshaped her musical approach.
Morris emphasized that her life has changed since becoming a mother. "I am forever changed, and I think for the better," she remarked. However, sharing her life as a single mother can be complex, especially as she balances dating, motherhood, and her upcoming tour. She enjoys keeping busy with her career, demonstrating resilience.
Hayes’s experiences with his parents' careers also bring her joy. "It's cool for him to see his parents doing what they both love," she noted. He often accompanies her on tour and is now starting to understand what it means. "He loves it. He's 5 now, so he's understanding more what is happening," she told PEOPLE.
In addition to her musical projects, Morris has written specific songs for her son. At the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of "The Wild Robot," she revealed that her creations often focus on Hayes. "I think my son's watched the trailer on my phone probably 80 times," she shared with pride.
Morris explained how she compared a movie trailer to her son, simplifying the concept for him. "I'm like, 'No, this is like the appetizer to the movie,'" she remarked, helping him grasp the idea. She feels proud knowing Hayes recognizes her voice in the project. "I definitely wrote these two songs for the soundtrack with him in mind as his mother."
