Margo Price Embraces Sobriety and Finds Her Best Headspace
Country singer-songwriter Margo Price attributes her thriving mental state to her sobriety. The Nashville-based artist, 41, shared insights about her well-being in an interview with People, published on Sunday, March 23. "I feel like I’m in the best head space of my life. My creative juices are functioning on all cylinders, and I just feel really happy," she expressed. Price has refrained from alcohol since 2021.
Price recently recalled a refreshed morning after a late performance at Willie Nelson’s ranch, ending around 12:30 AM. She reflected, "If I would’ve been drinking, it would’ve been a much rougher morning. I got up with two hours of sleep and set my alarm for 4:20." She emphasized her readiness to deliver an outstanding show, stating, "Get up, hit the road, and I’m here and ready."
In 2018, Price faced heartbreak when she lost her twin son, Ezra, just two weeks after his birth. She shared with People that this tragic event plunged her into "a whole ‘nother period of depression." In 2021, Price wrote an essay for GQ, describing her lifestyle transformation. "During this tumultuous past year, I did the most rebellious thing I’ve ever done: I quit drinking," she noted. The COVID-19 pandemic also left a profound impact on her life.
Price wrote about appearing to have it all together but revealed the struggles of lockdown. "One recurring dream depicted masked and unmasked faces around me in silence as I sank into heavy quicksand," she recounted. She elaborated on her reasons for drinking in the past, stating, "I drank because I was worried about the world, I drank because I was bored, and I drank even though I didn’t really want to."
Importantly, Price did not attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. She crafted her version of sobriety that resonated with her unique experience. "As women, we are always saying we are sorry. The only one I need to beg forgiveness from is myself," she wrote. She explained her belief that quitting drinking has positively impacted her parenting and career.
In her recent interview with People, Price expressed a sense of optimism. Married to her band’s guitarist, Jeremy Ivey, she shares a son’s twin brother and a daughter born in 2019. "I feel like I’m aging backwards," she described, noting a newfound love for nature, hiking, canoeing, and fishing.
