Mel Gibson's Malibu Home Lost in L.A. Wildfires; Chickens Survive
Mel Gibson has disclosed that he lost his Malibu home to the Los Angeles wildfires, PEOPLE reported. The actor made this revelation during an appearance on NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports on January 9, while he was filming in Austin, Texas.
"Obviously, it’s kind of devastating. It’s emotional," stated Gibson, 69. He mentioned the personal attachments he had built over many years: "You live there for a long time, and you had all your stuff." He expressed his unique feelings, noting, "I’ve been relieved from the burden of my stuff because it’s all in cinders."
Images of the Pacific Palisades wildfires show the extensive damage as homes burned. Gibson noted his unease about being away when the fires struck his neighborhood. "I knew my neighborhood was on fire, so I thought, 'I wonder if my place is still there.' But when I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there," he shared. He humorously added, "At least I haven’t got any of those pesky plumbing problems anymore."
Gibson highlighted that his "chickens survived; it was amazing." He added that he believes his neighboring celebrities, including Ed Harris, also suffered losses. "It was completely toasted," he remarked about his property.
The recent fires prompted an evacuation, leading over 80,000 people to leave their homes. Authorities in Los Angeles reported multiple structures destroyed or damaged. A rapidly spreading fire began in Pacific Palisades on January 7, while extreme winds fueled its intensity. By January 8, the fires had devastated many Malibu beachfront properties.
During the interview, Gibson reflected on personal losses: "All kinds of stuff – everything from photographs to files to just personal things that I had from over the years, and clothing." He acknowledged, "These are only things," maintaining a positive outlook. "The good news is that those in my family and those I love are all well... we’re all happy and healthy," he emphasized, noting that his partner Rosalind Ross and their family had evacuated.
Many celebrities have faced losses as a result of the wildfires, including Leighton Meester, Adam Brody, Anna Faris, and Paris Hilton. On her Instagram, Hilton expressed profound heartbreak, stating, "I’m standing here in what used to be our home, and the heartbreak is truly indescribable." She conveyed her initial shock and how witnessing the aftermath intensified her emotions. "It feels like my heart has shattered into a million pieces," she wrote.
The wildfires have led to dire situations, increasing concern about the safety and well-being of those affected – both locals and celebrities alike.
