Naomi Watts Shares Reasons Behind Almost Leaving Hollywood
Oscar nominee Naomi Watts revealed that she nearly left Hollywood. She credited the late director David Lynch for reviving her career by casting her in the 2001 film Mulholland Drive, saying, "I wouldn’t have stayed."
Watts emphasized Lynch's pivotal role in her journey in America. During her appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark on January 21, she highlighted Lynch’s impact, sharing that he was instrumental in her career progression at that critical moment. "I wouldn’t have stayed had I not met David Lynch," the U.K. native said.
Watts shared that, prior to meeting Lynch, she had struggled for a decade with failed auditions. "Nothing was happening," she noted, reflecting on how her desperation alienated others. She recounted her agent advising her, "You’re too intense. You’re making people uncomfortable." Despite needing work, Watts expressed her frustration about the situation.
As an Academy Award nominee twice since her breakout role, she described Lynch as "a real mentor and friend." She noted his profound influence on those around him. "He really affected so many people," she stated, elaborating on how Lynch's generosity of spirit and approach to life left a lasting impression.
On January 16, following the announcement of Lynch’s passing, Watts honored his memory. Though the cause of his death was not disclosed, it was known he had been battling emphysema since September 2024, due to a long history of smoking. Watts expressed her grief, stating, "The world will not be the same without him."
On Instagram, she shared her heartache and reflected on their bond, stating, "His creative mentorship was truly powerful. He put me on the map." She added that his wisdom, humor, and love instilled in her a faith in herself that she had never experienced before.
