Natalie Joy Opens Up About Miscarrying Her and Nick Viall's Second Child
Natalie Joy and Nick Viall recently recorded a heartfelt podcast episode while Joy was "actively miscarrying" their second baby, US Weekly reported. During the January 29 episode of "The Viall Files," Joy expressed deep sorrow over the loss. "It has been the biggest heartbreak, I think, of my life," said Joy, age 26. She added, "I feel so empty inside," highlighting the overwhelming emotions she faced.
During the discussion, Joy cried multiple times as she shared her anguish. She expressed feeling "dead inside" after the miscarriage. Joy recalled spotting for a while, and feeling anxious since it was different from her previous pregnancy experience. She and Viall welcomed their daughter River in February 2024.
Joy revealed that she sensed she was losing the baby but struggled to accept it. "It just got heavier and heavier...it was like I gave birth," she explained. "Nick ran into the bathroom as I was screaming and crying." In the aftermath, Viall comforted Joy, holding her close during the distressing experience before eventually helping to "retrieve" the remains.
"That was the hardest night of my life," Joy remarked. She empathized with others who have gone through similar experiences, sharing, "I was so mad at my body for letting it go." This connection to others was important to her as she navigated her grief.
Joy reaffirmed the complexity of dealing with such loss. She shared that a conversation with her doctor aided her healing. "Our doctor was able to say it was unviable," she explained. "If you focus on the scientific part, I think that’s what gets you through it." However, she noted the immense emotional toll that motherhood brings, stating, "From the first positive pregnancy test, I felt that baby."
Joy continues to deal with physical reminders of her loss, mentioning that she is "still bleeding" regularly. "I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go into our bathroom and not feel that feeling."
In the podcast, Joy articulated why she wanted to share this painful experience. "It’s going to take a long time to heal from this. It is raw and we’re feeling it right now," she conveyed. She aims to connect with mothers who have experienced similar loss, stating, "You’re not alone." Joy emphasized that she doesn’t want the memory of this baby to fade: "I don’t want time to go on, and for this baby to have just been, like, a blip in our lives..."
