Nicole Kidman Discusses Mortality and Grief
Nicole Kidman opened up about her thoughts on mortality and grief in a recent GQ interview published on November 18. At 57, Kidman reveals she is experiencing her emotions more deeply than ever as she navigates her 50s.
Kidman explained that feelings of "mortality, connection, life hitting you" resonate with her intensely now. She discussed her experiences with "the loss of parents, raising children, marriage," and other pivotal moments that shape a person's existence. Kidman shared, "So life is, whew. It’s definitely a journey." She shares two daughters, Sunday Rose, 16, and Faith Margaret, 13, with her husband Keith Urban, and is also a mother to Bella, 31, and Connor, 29, from her former marriage to Tom Cruise.
She conveyed how emotions can strike unexpectedly, "It’s a wake up at 3 a.m. crying and gasping kind of thing." Kidman elaborated that truly experiencing these powerful feelings means being fully present in them.
Recently, she faced the loss of her mother, Janelle, who passed away at 84 in September. This tragedy led to Kidman's early departure from the Venice International Film Festival. "Today I arrived in Venice to find out...my beautiful, brave mother Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed," stated Babygirl director Halina Reijn during the festival. Kidman expressed her shock and gratitude in her statement, adding that the award she received was for her mother, who profoundly influenced her life.
In October, while attending the Los Angeles premiere of Lioness season 2, Kidman reflected on her grief. "It’s been hard. It’s a hard road. I’m hanging in there," she revealed, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of her successes without her mother's presence. She expressed, "I wish my mama was here...work is great, but I wish my mama was here."
