Nicole Kidman Discusses Owning Elton John's Original 'Your Song' Lyrics
On Thursday, January 30, during her appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," the 57-year-old Nicole Kidman disclosed her acquisition of Bernie Taupin's original handwritten lyrics from Elton John's single "Your Song," released in 1970, PEOPLE reported.
This revelation came after Stephen Colbert, the 60-year-old host, asked Kidman if she had ever requested autographs. "I’ve asked people to sign a copy of a book. Philip Roth and Elton John," Kidman responded.
She mentioned, "That was because we bought lyrics of ‘Your Song.’" The song was written by John, 77, and Taupin, 74. When Colbert inquired, "Where do you keep those?" Kidman playfully answered, "Shh," placing her finger to her lips.
The song appears in Kidman's film "Moulin Rouge!" from 2001, wherein it was performed by her co-stars Ewan McGregor and Alessandro Safina.
In 2019, Kidman and her husband Keith Urban even shared a rendition of "Your Song." Urban, 57, played the piano while they harmonized and Urban began with, "It’s a little bit funny/This feeling inside/I’m not one of those who can/Easily hide."
While he sang "If I was a sculptor," Kidman jokingly interjected, "But you’re not," before they continued their duet.
"A little backstage moment before heading to Monterey ❤️🌹@KeithUrban," Kidman captioned the Instagram video of this performance.
During the "Late Show'' appearance, Kidman mentioned that her first concert was to see the rock band AC/DC. Colbert remarked, "Wow, you're pretty hip," to which she replied, "Thank you; and then second was [David] Bowie," eliciting cheers from the audience.
The handwritten lyrics for "Your Song" were prominently displayed at Bonhams in London on October 10, 2018. This cherished piece of musical history continues to resonate with fans, reminding them of its enduring legacy.
