Paris Hilton Advocates for Child Abuse Bill Amid Personal Trauma: 'Silence Doesn't Heal'
Paris Hilton continues her advocacy for child abuse victims after experiencing trauma at a Utah boarding school, PEOPLE reported. On December 16, Hilton shared an open letter on Instagram, urging the U.S. House of Representatives to prioritize the passing of the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Bill before the Christmas recess.
"In my life, I carried deep, unspoken pain," wrote the mom of two. "I thought if I stayed quiet long enough, I could convince myself it didn’t happen. But silence doesn’t heal; it protects the ones who cause harm. Speaking up has been the hardest thing, yet the most powerful."
Hilton explained the abuse she suffered as a teenager in youth residential treatment facilities. "I faced physical restraints, sexual abuse, isolation, and overmedication. I was told I didn’t matter and that nobody would believe me, not even my family. That burden of trauma haunted me until I found my voice."
The heiress encouraged every member of the House to prioritize children unable to advocate for themselves. "They’re depending on you. Let’s turn pain into purpose and protect the most vulnerable."
In August 2020, Hilton discussed her traumatic 11-month experience at Provo Canyon School, which she described as "continuous torture." She noted that her parents sent her there due to concerns about her partying lifestyle. Allegedly, the staff would bully her and other children, instilling a sense of fear to maintain control.
Hilton revealed that advocating for this change has been both "challenging and rewarding." She noted meeting other "brave survivors" during her advocacy journey. After the Act was passed unanimously on December 11, she expressed that it marked "one of the best moments of my life."
"It proves that we can create real change when we listen to survivors and put politics aside," she added, emphasizing that the journey continues until the bill becomes law. Now, she calls on the U.S. House of Representatives to take action.
"I have always believed in transforming pain into purpose. Survivors like me have fought for too long. I urge you to carry this fight across the finish line. Let’s create a moment our country can take pride in – one where we choose to protect the vulnerable."
A representative for the reality TV star revealed her commitment to traveling to Washington every six to ten months since October 2021 to reform youth treatment facilities. Hilton affirmed her dedication, stating, "I will not stop fighting for these children and being their voice."
