Polish Billionaire to Sue Meta Over Fake Advertisements
Polish billionaire Rafal Brzoska and his wife are initiating legal action against Meta due to misleading advertisements on Facebook and Instagram, reports Reuters. These fake ads feature Brzoska's likeness and provide false information about his wife.
Brzoska stated they have not yet chosen a jurisdiction for the upcoming lawsuit. This case will add to a growing trend of efforts to hold the tech giant responsible for advertisements that persist despite user reports about them. A spokesperson for Meta claimed that the company removes misleading ads once notified and collaborates with local authorities to combat scams.
Brzoska, founder of the Polish parcel locker company InPost, notified Meta of the issue at the beginning of July, yet a resolution was not reached. "We plan to file a private lawsuit against Meta… The jurisdictions for the lawsuit have yet to be decided. We will finalize this in a few weeks," Brzoska told Reuters. He also mentioned considering all options, including potential action in the U.S. if there are no developments in Europe.
Brzoska and his wife seek to prevent Meta from profiting from content that infringes on their rights. They also request significant compensation to be donated to a charity, proportional to the advertising revenue generated from such false information.
