Prince Harry Remembers His Beloved Beagle While Meeting Service Dog at Invictus Games
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle expressed love for a special dog at the Invictus Games held on February 9, 2025, PEOPLE reported. The event featured Prince Harry meeting the 3-year-old black Labrador, Thorn, who supports mental health for first responders in the Yukon. Thorn’s owner, Ali Harper, noted that Prince Harry shared heartfelt thoughts about his deceased beagle, Guy, whom Meghan rescued from a Kentucky kill shelter in 2015. "Harry kneeled next to Thorn and expressed how much he misses his dog," Harper stated. "He thanked us for what we do with Thorn." Meghan also interacted with Thorn, allowing for a memorable group photo.
Meghan announced Guy's death through a video tribute on her new Instagram account launched on January 7. The tribute highlighted cherished family moments with Guy, including time spent with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Meghan shared, "He was with me through several life milestones — from working on "Suits" to becoming a mom — his presence comforted me through everything."
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also provide a home for a black Labrador named Pula and a senior rescue beagle named Mamma Mia.
Thorn serves as Harper's first service dog, offering comfort to athletes and their families at the Invictus Games. Harper expressed that they received overwhelming feedback from athletes and VIPs about Thorn’s support. "Many personal dogs couldn’t attend, making Thorn's presence vital."
Thorn's experience at the opening ceremony on February 8 was positive, which included performances by notable artists like Katy Perry and Chris Martin. Harper remarked, "Afterward, he enjoyed a good snooze with everyone — he was a little worn out!"
During their time at the Invictus Games, Prince Harry and Meghan engaged with various athletes and young fans. They met 10-year-old Wyatt Hutchison at the wheelchair basketball match when he excitedly called out to Harry. His mother, Lindsay, described the experience as a chance of a lifetime for her son, adding, "Wyatt was starstruck!"
The adaptive sports competition, initiated by Prince Harry in 2014, takes place from February 8 to 16 across Vancouver and Whistler, Canada.
