Prince William Enjoys a Pint with Soccer Fans Following Kate Middleton's Cancer Remission Announcement
Prince William recently surprised soccer fans by treating them to drinks during his first public outing since his wife, Princess Kate Middleton, announced her cancer remission.
The 42-year-old Prince of Wales was spotted at a Birmingham Wetherspoons pub. He met with Aston Villa supporters before a match with Everton on January 15. His visit followed a prior engagement at the College of Paramedics conference, where he was named patron for the organization.
The soccer club arranged the pub visit after William had expressed interest in meeting passionate fans. A spokesperson from Kensington Palace confirmed that the prince bought drinks for everyone present.
While waiting for his train home, William stopped at the pub within Birmingham New Street station, as reported by The Sun's Royal Editor, Matt Wilkinson. Rebecca English from the Daily Mail remarked on the cultural significance of a future king visiting a well-known pub chain.
Eighteen-year-old Daniel Jones, who was also at the pub, described William as "a lovely guy, proper down to earth." He noted the prince’s passion for the soccer team and connection with the fans. "I think if he didn’t have other commitments he would have loved to be at the match," he added.
John McEvoy, a 64-year-old business owner, shared a similar sentiment. He called William a "really nice, genuine" person and mentioned, "He said he would be watching the match on TV tonight."
William's appearance came just a day after Princess Kate announced she was in remission during a hospital visit on January 14. In an Instagram post, she expressed gratitude towards The Royal Marsden for their care over the past year.
"My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me," she shared. Kate described her experience with the treatment, stating, "It is a relief to now be in remission." She emphasized focusing on her recovery, noting that adjusting to a cancer diagnosis requires time.
