Prince William Visits Welsh Guards for Weapons Training

Prince William recently joined the Welsh Guards for an engaging morning of weapons training on Salisbury Plain. As the honorary Colonel of the Guards, Prince William observed and participated in live firing exercises alongside the soldiers of the 1st Battalion. During the visit on November 26, dressed in a combat uniform and beret, he practiced using a sniper rifle and a machine gun, experiencing the recoil from each shot before promptly reloading. This training session emphasized the transition of the Welsh Guards from ceremonial roles, such as participating in the late Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, King Charles's coronation, and Trooping the Colour, to the more operational roles required of the Field Army both overseas and in the U.K. Recently, the Guards were involved in operations in the Falkland Islands and Oman. Now, they are refreshing their skills with new weapons systems like sniper rifles, GPMGs, and Small Uncrewed Aerial Systems (sUAS) drones to ensure readiness and proficiency.

During his visit, Prince William received a briefing on the regiment's current initiatives and utilized binoculars to survey the training ground before interacting with Specialist Platoons. He also explored how Welsh Guards personnel are adapting from ceremonial duties back to field operations. The Prince last interacted with the Guards at Combermere Barracks in March and expressed his admiration for their efforts in physical and mental rehabilitation.
