Robert De Niro Fights Cyberattackers in First Trailer for Netflix's Zero Day Mini Series
Netflix has released the first trailer for "Zero Day," a captivating conspiracy thriller that brings together legendary actor Robert De Niro and acclaimed actress Angela Bassett in leading roles. Slated to premiere on February 20, 2025, this limited series follows former U.S. President George Mullen, portrayed by De Niro, who steps into the role of head of the Zero Day Commission. Mullen is drawn out of retirement to navigate the chaos unleashed by a monumental cyberattack that wreaks havoc nationwide, causing thousands of deaths through disasters like plane crashes and train derailments. This is prepared by SSP.
Teamed with current president Evelyn Mitchell, played by Bassett, the duo sets out to identify those responsible for the catastrophic event. Despite rampant disinformation and the shadowy ambitions of power brokers across technology, Wall Street, and the government, Mullen's quest for truth compels him to unveil deep-seated secrets, risking everything in the process. The trailer reveals tense exchanges, where Mullen is briefed by President Mitchell on the newly formed commission's expansive powers of surveillance, search, and seizure. When Mullen questions the reach of these actions, Mitchell pointedly tells him that they need to do what’s necessary to get to the bottom of the crisis. "People will believe what they need to," she states, underscoring the complex tension between truth and perception.
Alongside De Niro and Bassett, the series boasts a stellar cast, including Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, Connie Britton, and Matthew Modine, with notable appearances by Bill Camp, Dan Stevens, Gaby Hoffmann, and Clark Gregg. "Zero Day" is a product from the creative minds of Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim, and Michael S. Schmidt, all of whom also assume roles of executive producers and writers. Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, the show promises to blend suspense with deep political and technological intrigue.
De Niro's portrayal of Mullen emphasizes honesty and transparency with the public, offering a glimpse into a character who plays no games. In addition to his performance, De Niro adds his experience as an executive producer, alongside other noteworthy figures in the show's production.
