Ryan Reynolds' Efforts to Enlist Nicolas Cage for ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ Cameo
Ryan Reynolds revealed his attempts to invite Nicolas Cage for a cameo as Ghost Rider in "Deadpool and Wolverine." This information came to light during the November 7 episode of Entertainment Weekly’s "The Awardist" podcast.
Concept art from the film, shared by Marvel Studios visual development supervisor Rodney Fuentebella, indicated that both Cage and Ben Affleck’s Daredevil were initially considered for sequences alongside stars like Jennifer Garner, Chris Evans, and Wesley Snipes. However, this idea did not come to fruition. Reynolds mentioned, "They were in early drafts. We had versions of that sequence, but it just did not work out."
As a part of his insights, Reynolds emphasized the balance between budget constraints and creative inspiration. While discussing the film’s substantial budget, he stated, "You want to give yourself as much constraint, which really I think facilitates asymmetrical thinking and creativity." He stressed that excess resources and time could diminish creativity, leading to a need for edits and adjustments.
Regarding Cage, Reynolds did reach out for him to reprise his Ghost Rider role, as Cage had played the character in 2007’s "Ghost Rider" and its 2011 sequel. Despite appeals, Cage ultimately declined, which Reynolds regretted openly, expressing, "But we did talk to Nic Cage. We tried to get him, but he was a no-go ... I would’ve loved him."
"Deadpool and Wolverine" serves as a tribute to various Marvel films made by Fox, including the previous "Deadpool" entries and the "X-Men" series. In this film, Chris Evans reprises his role as Johnny Storm from Fox’s "Fantastic Four", while Garner returns as Elektra and Snipes as Blade. Dafne Keen will portray Laura/X-23 once more, having previously featured in "Logan." Meanwhile, Channing Tatum is finally set to play Gambit after previous delays on his X-Men spinoff during Fox's ownership.
In a further development, Halle Berry, known for her role as Storm, expressed her willingness to reprise the character. She revealed that Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, had asked if she would appear, but stated, "I said, ‘Yeah, if he asked me,’ but he never asked me."
"Deadpool 3" will also feature cameos from Henry Cavill, portraying an alternate version of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Additionally, Reynolds and Lively's children, Inez and Olin, will appear as Kidpool and Babypool, adding a familial touch to the ensemble cast.
