Solar activity forecast for July 18-20: expectations for magnetic storms
Anticipating increased solar activity in the coming days, the Space Weather Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has published a forecast for solar and geomagnetic activity from July 18-20, 2024.
Geomagnetic storms, which impact both individuals and equipment, are categorized into various power levels denoted by the K-index ranging from 2 to 9. Higher K-index values denote stronger storms and their corresponding effects.
On Thursday, July 18, solar activity is expected to register a K-index reading of 4, corresponding to the yellow level. This signifies a relatively weak magnetic storm. Subsequently, on Friday, July 19, the storm's activity will diminish to a K-index reading of 3, equivalent to the green level. These readings represent minor geomagnetic disturbances that will persist until Friday, July 20.
It is important to note that the forecast is subject to periodic updates, with solar researchers providing new data every three hours. These updates may result in changes to the initial forecast, warranting continuous monitoring.
