Star Wars Star Kelly Marie Tran Comes Out as Queer
Kelly Marie Tran, known for her work in Star Wars and as the first Southeast Asian Disney princess in Raya and the Last Dragon, has publicly come out as queer. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed, "I haven’t said this publicly yet, but I’m a queer person." This announcement coincides with her role in the upcoming film The Wedding Banquet, directed by Andrew Ahn. The film is a modern remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 queer comedy, where Tran plays Angela, a woman navigating life with her girlfriend Lee, portrayed by Lily Gladstone. The plot centers on Angela's arranged marriage with her gay friend Chris (Bowen Yang) to secure a green card for him and raise IVF funds for herself. This is prepared by SSP.
Tran shared the personal resonance of her role with scenes reminding her of coming out to her mother. "I’ve never truly felt this accepted before," Tran said of her experience filming. Ahn sought to reflect his community experiences while honoring the film's spirit, stating, "It’s even more queer." The film features additional performances from Han Gi-chan and Joan Chen.
Previously, Tran faced significant online harassment due to her groundbreaking role in the "Star Wars" saga, leading her to delete her social media. Despite this, she stresses, "Maybe they just don't have the imagination to understand that there are different types of people living in the world."
The Wedding Banquet, set to premiere this spring, marks another milestone in Tran's journey of authenticity and acceptance.
