Tim Allen Discusses Jonathan Taylor Thomas’s Possible Cameo in 'Shifting Gears'
Tim Allen recently addressed the likelihood of Jonathan Taylor Thomas making an appearance in his new sitcom, Shifting Gears. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Allen stated, "Everything is a possibility." He revealed that Thomas visited the set during the filming of their last episode.
Allen expressed his desire to collaborate with Thomas again. He remarked, "He’s literally my kid. I raised that kid for eight years on Home Improvement. All of these are my kids, and I’m kind of sick about this."
Tim Allen's Show Background
Allen played a significant role in Home Improvement, which aired from 1991 to 1999. During that time, he worked alongside Thomas, Patricia Richardson, and others. Thomas left the show early to focus on education and later stepped back from acting.
Although Thomas withdrew from the spotlight for years, he reunited with Allen on the set of Last Man Standing. This partnership consisted of four episodes, which Thomas directed three of. While Allen became known as America's beloved sitcom dad, Thomas remained less visible.
Shifting Gears: Cast and Comedic Dynamics
In Shifting Gears, Allen portrays a widowed father with an estranged daughter played by Kat Dennings. The duo instantly connected after being cast. Allen explained, "The director wanted to see how we got along. It never stopped. The kismet was crazy." Their shared birthday adds an intriguing element to their partnership, despite their differing personalities.
"I adore this person already," Allen stated about Dennings. He noted that their on-screen arguments feel natural and energetic, showcasing effortless comedy. Kat’s ability to deliver lines with a straight face reminds him of the character he portrayed in Last Man Standing.
Dennings on Her Connection with Allen
Dennings reciprocated Allen's feelings about their chemistry. She mentioned their instant connection during a lunch meeting after she accepted the role. "I felt immediately like I could trust him for some reason," she noted in her interview with Us.
Their on-set trust allowed them to enhance their comedic performances. Dennings remarked, "It felt very organic." She added, "The arguments are my favorite scenes to play because I have no fear." This sense of freedom makes their comedic interactions joyous and spontaneous.
While Allen enjoys working on Shifting Gears, he initially hesitated to return to sitcoms. He explained, "It was a complicated decision." The impact of streaming services on television had left him uncertain about future projects. However, his aspirations to elevate the storytelling on traditional TV ultimately compelled him to take the plunge.
