Valerie Bertinelli Discusses Breakup with Mike Goodnough
Valerie Bertinelli confirmed her breakup with Mike Goodnough, sharing that she feels "irreversibly changed by him for the better." While they are "no longer a couple," her reflections suggest a positive transformation.
The actress acknowledged that she doesn’t need to face her breakup moment by moment. As a alum of Hot in Cleveland, she stated she's "irreversibly changed" despite their split. On Instagram, she expressed feelings of growth: "I know I am becoming a much stronger and more benevolent human for having met him and spent time with him."
Valerie emphasized the significant impact he had on her life. "I look at life with a different perspective and care thanks to my conversations with him. He assisted in healing old childhood wounds I had long struggled to address."
Although the two are no longer romantically involved, Valerie affirmed that Mike will "hold a very special place" in her heart. She expressed her initial attraction to his writing. "It’s heartfelt, authentic, smart, funny, sensitive, caring, and from the soul," she noted. "In person, he is just as heartfelt, sensitive, and caring as his writing."
Valerie, now 64, reflected on her gratitude for knowing him. "I feel so lucky to have gotten to know him and to soak up his insights," she stated. Valuing their deep conversations, she noted how they led her to fascinating new perspectives.
Valerie began dating Mike in early 2024, about two years after her divorce from Tom Vitale. She was previously married to Eddie Van Halen, the father of her 33-year-old son Wolfgang Van Halen, from 1981 to 2007.
Valerie and Mike met online years prior and eventually developed a long-distance relationship after numerous phone calls. "We both had strong feelings, trying not to admit them," she said. Reflecting on Mike's "beautiful timbre," she remarked, "I can’t talk to this man right now because that’s really sexy."
Initially, they agreed to a "three-week rule" to see each other regularly, but as time passed, challenges arose. "The summer has been booked full," she shared in July. "It is challenging."
Despite the romance coming to an end, the One Day at a Time actress perceives this experience as valuable. "Sitting in discomfort can be incredibly challenging," she expressed on The Drew Barrymore Show. "But it's super powerful."
