Why Kieran Culkin Hasn’t Shown Brother Macaulay’s Holiday Classic ‘Home Alone’ to His Kids
"Home Alone" is not yet a part of Kieran Culkin’s holiday traditions. The "Succession" star, aged 42, shared that he and his wife, Jazz Charton, 36, have not introduced his brother Macaulay Culkin’s famous holiday films to their two children, Kinsey, 5, and Wilder, 3.
Kieran expressed some concerns during an interview with E! News on December 2 at the Gotham Awards in New York City. "There are still some scary parts," he mentioned. He highlighted specific scenes that could be frightening for younger viewers. For instance, he mentioned, "For the 3-year-old, there’s the tarantula and the guy at the end who said, ‘I’m gonna bite off all your fingers.’ That’s scary for a 3-year-old."
Despite the concerns, Kieran hinted that this could be the year for his children to watch "Home Alone." He stated, "We think they might be ready for 'Home Alone' this year. If not, next year."
Kieran’s brother, Macaulay, 44, became famous as a child star with iconic roles in 1990’s "Home Alone" and its sequel, "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York." Young Kieran had a role in both films as Fuller McCallister, Kevin’s younger cousin.
In a March 2023 conversation with Esquire, Kieran shared feelings about Macaulay’s rapid rise to fame. He said he felt sympathy for his brother at such a young age. "Even at that time, as a kid, I remember thinking, ‘That sucks for him.’ Poor f—ing guy," he reflected. "He was little and having to try to accept that level of fame as reality."
Having witnessed his brother’s swift ascent in Hollywood made Kieran hesitant to pursue acting after his early experiences with "Home Alone." He ultimately gained recognition with his 2002 film, "Igby Goes Down." He revealed, "I had this unhealthy relationship with what I did for a living. I really wanted to do it, but I didn’t want to be successful at it."
While Kieran waits until his kids are ready to watch "Home Alone," Macaulay has already introduced the film to his own children. He shared the experience of showing the movie to his son Dakota, who is now 3. "I already showed it to him last year; he thinks it’s so funny," Macaulay told *Entertainment Tonight* in December 2023. He also humorously noted, "I convinced my oldest that he’s the kid in the movie. I said, ‘Remember you had yellow hair? Remember when you were getting the bad guys?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah!’ He is such a liar. I’m like, ‘You don’t remember any of that.’"
