Why Matthew Lillard Believes Shaggy Would Outrun Ghostface in a Scream Movie
Matthew Lillard recently shared insights about his memorable roles during a panel at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida. He expressed a strong belief that Ghostface, the antagonist from the Scream series, would stand no chance against his iconic character, Shaggy from Scooby-Doo.
During the panel, Lillard was asked how Shaggy would react in a Scream setting. He humorously stated, "[Shaggy] would 100% kick ass because he would literally see the first dead person and run for days." Lillard, now 55, continued, "He would act like any reasonable person, saying, ‘I’m out! I don’t want to be here! I don’t need to save anyone else. I’m leaving.’"
Reflecting on his involvement in the 1996 slasher film Scream, Lillard recalled working alongside co-star Skeet Ulrich. He described the experience as akin to the college atmosphere, saying, "We were a group of kids roaming Santa Rosa." He noted that they worked from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., often gathering in David Arquette’s room afterward to celebrate and unwind. "It was a pivotal moment for all of us," he remarked, pointing out that their bond remains strong today.
Ulrich reiterated this feeling, revealing that the cast and crew had little notion that the low-budget film would evolve into a major cultural milestone. "We were just kids trying to break into the business in a significant way," he stated. "We were a bunch of actors who took a risk on a project that Hollywood itself wasn’t eager to support."
Lillard also confirmed his return for Scream 7, expected to release in February 2026. He humorously mentioned, "I’ve been asked literally 1,000 times since the first movie ended if I'm coming back. I’m happy to report I am."
