Why Shirley MacLaine Doesn't Think About Who She Wants to Be in Her Next Life
Shirley MacLaine, the distinguished Oscar winner, is renowned for her belief in reincarnation. In her latest book, "The Wall of Life: Pictures and Stories from This Marvelous Lifetime," she shares highlights from her current life. This book showcases personal stories and photographs that reflect her profound experiences.
In 1983, MacLaine gained notable fame for her role in "Terms of Endearment." That year also marked the release of "Out on a Limb," her influential nonfiction book that highlighted her spiritual journey and beliefs about reincarnation. As a result, MacLaine became recognized for her insights into past lives, experiencing both acclaim and criticism for her candidness.
In "The Wall of Life," she remains focused on this current life. Other family members, such as her parents and grandparents, occasionally surface. Although she contemplates her time left on Earth, she claims she has not devoted much thought to her next reincarnation. "Oh, honey, I don't know," she explains when asked about who she wishes to be next. "I need to spend some time in heaven first."
MacLaine recognizes the impact of her openness regarding her spiritual beliefs. In her book and the 1987 miniseries based on "Out on a Limb," she noted the positive influence of sharing her thoughts. "I was never nervous about being open about any of that; people came up to me regularly and said the book changed their life."
She dedicates only one page of her 243-page book to "Out on a Limb." The majority of "The Wall of Life" features details about her life, career, friendships, and romantic experiences, enriched by never-before-seen photos and reflections.
Inspired by a significant wall filled with decades' worth of personal pictures, she felt compelled to write. "One day I was looking at my wall of pictures," she shares. "I thought I should write about this — and that's what happened."
"I've had an enchanted life," she adds. By observing her wall, MacLaine realized this enchantment and deeply appreciated her journey.
"The Wall of Life" was released on October 22 by Crown Publishing and is available in bookstores.
