Wicked Star Ethan Slater Shares Similarities He Has With His Character Boq

Ethan Slater, a talented actor from Wicked, starred alongside Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Jonathan Bailey in his first major film role. Recently, he discussed the similarities between himself and his character, Boq.

Ethan believes that Wicked will become a favorite movie for his son. He is excited about eventually watching this 2024 film, set to hit theaters on Nov. 22, with his 2-year-old son, whom he shares with ex-wife Lilly Jay.

"That's a really special thing," Ethan shared at the Los Angeles premiere on Nov. 9. He added, "It's going to be so moving. I'm crying already watching it. I can't imagine."

Ethan first saw the Broadway show at age 11 and later had a heartwarming moment watching it with his 9-year-old niece. "I got to share Wicked with my niece when she turned nine," he recalled. "Watching her experience the show through her eyes meant so much to me. I can't wait to experience that again."

In this film adaptation, Ethan plays Boq, the Munchkin who is in love with Nessarose. He performs alongside a star-studded cast that includes Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh.

For Ethan, having his son see the movie means a lot. However, portraying Boq has been a magical experience for him, as well. He expressed, "It's really cool. The craziest thing is Wicked has been around for 20 years. Being part of this beloved legacy and being one of the hundreds of Boqs means so much to me."

Ethan connects deeply with his character, Boq. "I love Boq because he's a well-intentioned guy looking for a community and love," he explained. "He'll do anything for those he cares about. Even when he makes mistakes, he leads with his heart."

His co-stars recognize that he embodies these qualities. Bowen Yang, who plays Pfannee in the film, praised Ethan for fostering camaraderie among the cast. "Ethan has that quality that accelerates familiarity, friendship, and fellowship," Bowen shared with GQ.

Ariana Grande echoed this sentiment while discussing Ethan's resilience amid public scrutiny. In her words, "No one tries harder or spreads themselves thinner to be there for those they love." She believes knowing Ethan has positively impacted her, saying, "There is no one on this earth with a better heart."

Ethan is proud of Ariana’s portrayal of Glinda in the film. "I’m so proud of Ari and the work she’s done," he told GQ. "She’s poured herself into it, and I’m excited for the world to see the amazing thing she created."
