Doja Cat's Artistic Evolution: Striving Beyond Pop to Explore Diverse Genres
Doja Cat isn't just focusing on writing hits to "protect her pockets" as she transitions from pop. Despite deepening her lyrical content, she ensures that her trademark 'tongue-in-cheek' style remains. She mentioned her excitement for the future, attributing it to her eagerness to delve into genres she loves.
In a conversation with Jack Harlow for Present Space, the 'Paint The Town Red' artist admitted that past songs were crafted to achieve popularity. However, now she's passionate about blending various genres like jazz, neo soul, indie, and rock into her music. Doja Cat remarked, "I really love jazz, neo soul, and different kinds of rock and indie, which often get sidelined. In the past, I stuck with what's popular. Now, I want to integrate beloved elements from different genres and create something innovative."
She highlighted her joy in mixing sounds and shared her intentions to venture sonically beyond just appealing to younger audiences or those drawn to themes like self-medication. "Writing about life's varied aspects beyond the same recurring themes is what I aim for," she noted.
This year, the 28-year-old artist diverged from her usual pop path on her recent album 'Scarlet,' focusing more on hip-hop and R'n'B. Reflecting on this transition, Doja Cat emphasized retaining her 'tongue-in-cheek' approach, anticipating more personal growth and experiences to highlight in her music.
While acknowledging the appeal of simple, universally relatable themes like partying, she aims to keep infusing music with creativity and relatability, moving beyond recycling familiar concepts.
