James Bond legend Britt Ekland has savage one-word response to rumours of huge 007 change
Britt Ekland, well-known for her role as Mary Goodnight in the 1973 Bond film "The Man with the Golden Gun," recently shared her decisive opinion on the ongoing discussion about who should be the next James Bond. Following Daniel Craig's departure, there has been much speculation about potential replacements, including calls for a female or a diverse choice. Daniel Craig himself has advocated for inclusivity, suggesting great roles for women and African-Americans. Among the frontrunners for the role is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, followed closely by actors like Jack Lowden and James Norton.
When asked on Good Morning Britain by host Rob Rinder if Bond could be portrayed as a woman, Britt Ekland's firm response was "No!" She emphasized that James Bond was written as a male character and should remain an English man. Discussing potential successors, Ekland expressed a preference, noting Taylor-Johnson's acting talent and suitability for the role.
Reflecting on the evolution of Bond films, Ekland mentioned that current Bond women have benefited from an era of political correctness and MeToo movements, contrasting it with her experiences as a ‘Bond girl’ during the more challenging 1960s and 70s. Despite these advances, she feels that the current portrayal loses some of the effortless allure her generation naturally had.
In 2021, Idris Elba's name was among the first rumored to replace Craig, as confirmed by franchise producer Barbara Broccoli. Nonetheless, Elba stated a desire to focus on his role as DCI John Luther rather than pursuing the Bond character.
