Justin Timberlake Pleads Guilty and Urges Against Drinking and Driving
Former NSYNC star Justin Timberlake, arrested last June for running a stop sign and swerving in Long Island, has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of driving while ability impaired. Timberlake, 43, made the plea at Sag Harbor Village Court in the Hamptons, New York, a less severe charge compared to driving while intoxicated, which he had previously denied. The judge fined Timberlake $500 with an additional surcharge of $260 and ordered him to perform 25 hours of community service. Furthermore, Timberlake has agreed to participate in a public service announcement on the dangers of drunk driving.
Addressing reporters post-sentencing, Timberlake admitted to making a mistake and used his platform to caution against drunk driving. "If you've had a drink, don't drive. Instead, call a friend or take an Uber. I've learned a hard lesson, and I hope others can learn from it too," he emphasized. Timberlake reflected on his actions, expressing regret for not upholding his personal standards but is grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness about safe driving.
The incident occurred on June 18 when Timberlake, who could not keep in his lane, was stopped by police. Bloodshot and glassy-eyed, he failed sobriety tests. Timberlake initially declined a breath test but later claimed that he had only one drink that evening. His lawyer, Edward Burke, maintained that Timberlake wasn’t intoxicated and cooperated fully with police.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney expressed appreciation for Timberlake's willingness to accept responsibility, stating the importance of equal justice irrespective of one’s celebrity status. Timberlake's case holds no special treatment; rather, similar consequences apply as with any other defendant under similar charges.
Timberlake’s recent arrest comes amid his busy schedule, including his European tour and an upcoming appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." Timberlake, who co-parent two sons with actress Jessica Biel, hopes his misstep can serve as a caution for others to make better choices regarding drinking and driving.
The pop star's heartfelt statements resonate deeply: everyone must take serious measures for public safety. "We can all be more safe out there," he remarked. His next concert will be in Newark, New Jersey, as part of "The Forget Tomorrow World Tour."
