Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Neighbors Grow 'Fed-Up' and Urge Them to 'Move On'
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's neighbors in Montecito, California, have expressed growing frustration and impatience with the couple, indicating a strong wish for them to move on. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to their £12 million mansion after stepping back from royal duties in January 2020. However, the once-excited local community appears to have become disenchanted over time.
Frank McGinity, an 88-year-old navy veteran, shared an unpleasant experience he had with the couple. He recounted being turned away by their security when he tried to present local history films, expecting they might be of interest. McGinity expressed shock at the rebuff, highlighting the infrequent sightings of the couple in their predominantly senior neighborhood. "The gate guy turned me away saying ‘they're not interested'," he was quoted in his memoir, "Get Off Your Street." This sentiment was echoed by another unnamed neighbor who told the Montecito Journal they "cannot wait for her [Meghan] to go."
Richards Mineards, a local society columnist, disclosed his disappointment at rarely seeing the couple, despite the town’s cultural vibrance. "The community is waiting for them – they’re gnashing at the bit," Mineards stated. He noted that Prince Harry is occasionally seen with his security detail during rare public outings like cycling, walking, or dining out, while Meghan is now and then spotted lunching with friends or shopping at local markets.
Additionally, Barry Maher, who works in PR and communications, described the national sentiment and local patience as wearing thin. Maher characterized the Sussexes’ lifestyle as a "travelling soap opera" and mentioned that although local residents are wealthy and not "living in cardboard boxes," there’s split opinion on the couple. Some display "unlimited tolerance" while others grow increasingly weary of the media frenzy surrounding them.
The overarching narrative from these Montecito locals reveals that despite Harry and Meghan moving to what is perceived as an idyllic, affluent community, their consistent absence and the perceived relentless media attention appear to be souring local perceptions.
