Chappell Roan Explains Confrontation with Photographer at 2024 MTV VMAs
Chappell Roan, the 26-year-old artist, addressed a viral red-carpet altercation during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, US Weekly reported. Captured in a widely circulated clip, Roan, while posing for photographers at the UBS Arena in New York, responded to an impatient photographer who shouted at her to "shut the f–k up." Unfazed, Roan shot back, "You shut the f–k up. No, not me, b*tch," before resuming her poses as the crowd cheered.
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Roan explained the incident further, stating, "This is quite overwhelming and quite scary. For someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at [them]...the carpet is horrifying, and I yelled back. You don’t get to yell at me like that."
The night brought Roan into the spotlight not only due to this moment but also her achievements. She won her first MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, delivering a heartfelt speech dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community. "I dedicate this to all the drag artists who inspire me... for all the queer kids in the Midwest watching right now, I see you. I understand you, because I am one of you," Roan said.
Roan also highlighted the pressures of her rising fame. "I just feel a little off today because I think that my career is just kind of going really fast and it’s really hard to keep up," she shared during a previous performance.
In addition, Roan was vocal about fans’ inappropriate behaviors. In TikTok videos, Roan criticized fans who feel entitled to invade her personal space, stating, "Abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing... That does not make it OK."
Despite these challenges, especially on the red carpet, inside the venue, Roan's experience was positive. She performed her hit song "Good Luck, Babe!" in a striking suit of armor, lighting a castle backdrop on fire with a flaming crossbow during her high-powered set. The track reached no. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, and she was also nominated for Push Performance of the Year and Song of the Summer for "Good Luck, Babe!"
