Colin Farrell Opens Up About Son's Rare Genetic Disorder

Actor Colin Farrell recently opened up in an emotional interview about his son, James, who has a rare neurogenetic disorder called Angelman syndrome, People reported.

Angelman syndrome affects about one in every 15,000 people worldwide and is caused by a genetic mutation. At around two and a half years old, James was diagnosed with this complex condition, which leads to symptoms such as developmental delays, lack of speech, seizures, and impaired balance.

Farrell, who shares 20-year-old James with model Kim Bordenave, recalled a poignant memory when his son took his first steps just before turning four. "I'll never forget James' first steps," Farrell said, wiping away tears.

Farrell noted that the condition often results in severe seizures, and he empathized with other parents facing similar challenges. Fortunately, James has not had a seizure in over a decade. Despite these difficulties, Farrell described his son as "magic."

Because James is approaching 21, Farrell acknowledged that many of the support systems available to children with special needs will soon become inaccessible to him. To address this, Farrell announced the launch of the Colin Farrell Foundation, aimed at providing new support structures for adults with intellectual disabilities through advocacy, education, and innovative programs.

Angelman syndrome typically becomes noticeable in babies between 6 to 12 months old due to delayed motor development and feeding issues, although no signs are apparent at birth. While there is no cure for the chromosomal mutation that causes it, treatments focus on managing symptoms such as seizures, often through various therapies like physical, speech, and occupational therapy.

Farrell stressed the importance of kindness and respect towards James and others affected by the condition. "I want the world to be kind to James," he stated. Through his foundation, Farrell aims to fill the gaps currently faced by families when their children with special needs transition to adulthood.

This comprehensive effort encapsulates Farrell's commitment to making a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, inspired by his journey with his son.
